Her father had Italian ancestry and her mom was Italian and German with Irish ancestry. Rene's scoliosis was severe enough that she was required to wear a full torso-brace in Junior High School. Jolly Green Giant, her classmates' nickname, came from her due to her height. Even though she went to Burroughs High School alongside Ron Howard (a fellow classmate) Even with her brace off she felt as a lone Ranger. Rene was forced to get out of high school as she entered the 10th grade. Because of the lack of money, Rene began taking part-time job over the next 18 months. The majority of the jobs were no cost. In the theater, she was employed as a hostess where films were free. Then she became an owner of a restaurant and was able to get the food she needed for free.
